There are certain things that you will want to have readily available, so you don’t have to try to find them at the last minute.

This blog should help you get everything organized and squared away, so you will know where to find what you need.

First things first – you need proper garage storage

Although this might seem like a small thing, it can help. When you sort and store items and objects in the correct places in your garage, it makes it easier to find what you need when you need it. You won’t have to tear through boxes in the garage or house hoping you remembered where you put it.

During the warmer parts of the year, the garage is often used for different types of work or activities. When winter closes in, the seasonal items need to be put away to ensure there is enough space to park a car.

It might be time to get rid of some of the items that you’ve been holding onto. Consider recycling and giving things to charity to help reduce the amount you have.

What do you need for the winter?

1. Snowblower

A snowblower can be a huge benefit, as long as it is in good working order. You should always make sure that it has had a recent tune-up and maintenance. Be sure that it has fresh oil, as well.

2. Snow shovels

A great example of stored shovels in the garage.

Do you have at least a couple of snow shovels? Hopefully, they are in good condition. Over time, the wooden handles could be at risk of breaking, especially when the snow is heavy or wet. Check the condition of the shovels before the winter arrives and be sure to replace anything that is in poor condition.

3. Melters and abrasives

You will want to have some different types of abrasives and melters to help deal with ice and other slick areas. You should have:

  • A full bag of rock salt
  • A bag of sand or abrasive gravel

These materials can help to reduce the risk of injury due to slipping and falling on ice.

4. Is the emergency generator ready?

If you live in an area where you have to worry about power outages, a generator can be a huge benefit. Check to make sure that it is in good working order, and that you have a full, extra can of gas in the event of an outage.

Also, make sure that you don’t run your generator in your garage because there won’t be enough ventilation. The generator creates carbon monoxide exhaust, which can get into the house and poison you and your family. This causes the deaths of far too many people each year, so be careful.

5. Remember your car

You need to make sure that you have bottles ofwindshield washer fluid, along with snow brushes and ice scrapers. You might also need to have some jumper cables, so make sure you know where they are located.

6. Everything Else

Neat ski equipment storage

With the winter here, it’s time to start bringing out some of the other gear to keep in the garage. This means it’s time to bring out thesleds, toboggans, and all of the other winter sports equipment. Check out these 5 great tips for storing winter equipment from Nuvo Garage.
