Should You Insulate Your Garage?

Should You Insulate Your Garage?

Have you been wondering whether insulating the garage is really needed or not? There might be some building standards that require homes with an attached garage to have a certain R‑value for the walls that are shared with the home, or for the ceiling if you have a room above your garage. If it is a detached garage, there are no regulations you need to follow when it comes to the insulation. Therefore, some people say they do not see the point in insulating their garage.

However, not insulating could be a mistake. If you want to do any sort of work in the garage, or any type of DIY project, it is going to be difficult if the space is too cold, to humid, or too hot. Check out the following reasons that might just convince you that it is a good idea to insulate your garage properly.

Use the Garage for More

One of the nice things about having a garage is that you do not just have to use it for parking your car. In fact, many people choose to use the garage for things such as fitness rooms, offices, workshops, or kids play rooms. Of course, turning the garage into these different rooms is difficult if you do not have the proper insulation. You are not going to want to work in a garage office in the middle of winter if it is not properly insulated.

Cold Could Enter the Home

If you have an attached garage, you will find that the cold can often enter the home through the garage. Even if you have weather stripping, the garage itself can become cold without insulation. This means every time you open the door from the house to the garage, cold air will seep into your home.

Safer Storage

Many people choose to use the garage as a place where they store many of their personal belongings. Perhaps they have a collection of comics, recreational equipment, or any other items they need to have in a safe place. A garage that cannot properly keep out the humidity can wreak havoc on these items. If you have bikes or other items with metal, keep in mind that a humid garage will increase the chance of rust showing up, and that is the last thing you want.

Less Noise

Here is one of the best reasons to insulate the garage, and one of the reasons that many people do not even consider. When you have insulation in the garage, it provides a barrier for more than just the heat and cold. It can also reduce the transmission of noises. This works in both directions. If someone is in the garage and recording a podcast in the makeshift studio, they will not want to be bothered by the sound of someone using the blender in the kitchen. If someone is in the house and trying to watch television, they do not want to be bothered by the sound of power tools. The insulation here can help immensely.

It can help to keep carbon monoxide from getting into the house, as well as other scents and fumes. Of course, you always want to have adequate ventilation, so if have an engine running, are using paint or paint thinner, or any other chemicals, be sure to have the doors and window open for your own safety.

These are just some of the most important reasons to consider getting insulation. Make sure you remember the garage door, too. It is essentially the outside wall of the garage. If your garage door does not have proper insulation, it will not do you much good.
